Located on the southeast coast of Africa, Mozambique is an enormous country encompassing 800,000 square kilometres, with a coastline extending roughly 2,500 kilometres along the Indian Ocean. The area was first explored by Vasco da Gama in 1498, and colonized by Portugal in 1505. In 1975 Mozambique gained independence and became the People’s Republic of Mozambique. For two decades Mozambique was inaccessible due to protracted Guerrilla warfare, however since 1992 Mozambicans have toiled to rebuild the infrastructure and have embarked upon one of Africa’s largest conservation projects to date in the Gorongosa National Park.
The Portuguese colonial and linguistic heritage can still be felt in the capital Maputo, a fascinating and colourful city with an up
beat tempo that incorporates both old and modern cultures. Cobbled streets and stately colonial era buildings juxtaposed with urban sidewalk cafes alive with Marrabenta make one of the hottest ‘chic’ cities in modern Africa.
Aptly named ‘the land of smiles’ and home to 21 million of them; this warm-hearted and uncommercialised country welcomes those willing to explore. Once a playground for South Africans, Mozambique is fast becoming a rising star in international tourism offering spectacular scenery, remote wilderness, excellent water activities and some of the world’s best dive sites.
Mozambique is comprised of magical off shore islands, notably Bazaruto Archipelago in the south and Quirimbas Archipelagos in the north. The south boasts dramatic sunsets over sand dunes and lush coastal bush teeming with indigenous birdlife; an opportunity to sail through mangrove channels in a traditional white sailed dhow, or laze under the palms of pristine beaches.
The unchartered north is one of the most bio diverse marine areas in the world. In this paradise of coastal panoramas, dugongs graze in sea grass meadows and turtles nest on the beaches. With world-class fishing, snorkelling, diving and bird watching this is a remote paradise perfect for those wanting to combine solitude with the sheer adventure of a lifetime experience.
